Bat Trang teapots and cups have long been part of Vietnamese tea culture. Discover the glazes and motifs, how to choose a set that feels right in the hand, and how to care for it for years to come.

In a tea session the leaves take the lead role, but the teapot and cups are the stage on which the story unfolds. For many Vietnamese people, ceramic teaware brings one name to mind: Bat Trang, the long-established pottery village on the banks of the Red River on the outskirts of Hanoi. Over generations, Bat Trang teapots and cups have sat on countless family tea tables, from festive gatherings to the most ordinary mornings.

Why Bat Trang teaware is so loved

Bat Trang ceramics are made from clay that is kneaded, shaped, painted, glazed and fired at high temperatures. The result is sturdy ware with a smooth glaze that stands up well to daily contact with hot water. Beyond practicality, each set carries the mark of the craftsperson and a traditional sense of beauty, making tea brewing feel both familiar and special.

Familiar glazes and motifs

The richness of Bat Trang ceramics shows most clearly in its glazes and decoration. A few highlights:

  • Blue-and-white: cobalt blue designs painted on a white ground, elegant and deeply familiar to generations of Vietnamese.
  • Crackle glaze: a fine web of cracks across the surface gives an antique look. Over time, tea may seep lightly into the cracks, so each cup takes on its owner's own story.
  • Brown, celadon and coloured glazes: from calm and earthy to bright and fresh, suiting many styles of tea table.
  • Motifs: lotus flowers, bamboo, village landscapes, the characters for happiness, prosperity and longevity, or fine gold and silver lines.

Teapots come in many shapes: round, tall and slender, with an overhead handle or a side handle. Each shape feels and pours differently, so the choice comes down to the brewer's preference.

How to choose the right set

A beautiful set is not necessarily the right set for you. When choosing, look for the following:

  1. A well-fitting lid: place it on and turn it gently; it should sit snugly without wobbling.
  2. A clean-pouring spout: the water should flow in a steady stream and stop without dripping.
  3. A comfortable handle: try holding the pot when it is full; it should not tire your hand or tip to one side.
  4. Even glaze, no cracks: check inside and out for deep cracks or chipped glaze.
  5. A light-coloured interior: it lets you enjoy the colour of the tea, an essential part of the pleasure.
  6. The right size: a small pot suits drinking alone or with one friend; a larger one is better for a group.

A traditional Vietnamese tea set usually includes a teapot, a pitcher for sharing the tea, small drinking cups and a tray or saucer. The pitcher evens out the brew before it is poured into each cup.

Caring for your teaware

  • Rinse the pot and cups with hot water before and after use.
  • Avoid harsh detergents, which can leave odours that affect the tea.
  • Turn pieces upside down to air-dry and store them somewhere ventilated, never damp inside a closed cupboard.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as pouring cold water into a hot pot.
  • Empty the spent leaves right after drinking so the pot does not hold on to stale smells.

Teaware and the tea space

A beautiful tea set does more than brew tea; it sets the mood of the whole room. In the Ngu Thuc Viet Tra tea space at the 1927 Tea Factory, teaware is arranged harmoniously on dark wooden shelves beside tea-hill paintings and soft lighting. In the teaware showroom, visitors can admire Bat Trang teapots and cups among many other pieces, taking time to study each shape, glaze and painted line.

Choosing teaware is like choosing a companion: it need not be elaborate, only comfortable in the hand, pleasing to the eye and able to turn every brew into a small joy.

Whether you are just discovering tea or have loved it for years, a Bat Trang set that suits you will become a close friend on your tea table, sharing quiet mornings and warm conversations alike.
